Odds and Ends

Something for the ladies

When it comes to the ladies, the odds are good this week for the brothers of Sigma Chi fraternity. Derby Days, a four-day-long nationwide philanthropic event for the fraternity, allows the brothers to work with 16 sororities to raise money for charity.

The weekend of fundraising and Greek bonding will draw to a close tonight at the Amphitheather during the sorority skit competition. Sorority teams had chances to win points throughout the week at events such as a scavenger hunt Tuesday and a blood drive Wednesday. Derby Days participants donated 72 pints of blood to the Red Cross.

Proceeds from all the events benefit the Children's Miracle Network, a charity that provides money for families with children who need special medical treatment. Last year the Sigma Chi national chapter donated over $400,000 to the fund.

Adam Namejko, third-year College student and Derby Days co-chairman, said he hopes to expand the scope of the event in the future.

"We're working to get more sponsors and more advertising," Namejko said.

At the University, Derby Days is sponsored by the Corner Meal Plan, but he said Sigma Chi looks for other support outside the University as well.

The women of Alpha Phi are now in first place, followed by Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Delta Pi. Tonight's skit competition will determine the winners.
