Softball swats Jackets to vacate league cellar

The Virginia softball team moved out of last place in the ACC by winning both ends of a doubleheader against Georgia Tech in Atlanta Saturday.

    The Cavs downed the Yellow Jackets (25-26, 2-4), 4-1, in the second game. Senior Karen Breshears went 3-for-3 and freshman Ruby Rojas homered to support sophomore pitcher Kristen Dennis, who threw a complete game three-hitter.

    Senior outfielder Meaghan Young collected two hits in the series, the 186th and 187th of her career, to break a school record for base hits.

    Against the Wolfpack (5-13, 0-7 ACC), Virginia (18-3, 3-4) took five of six singles matches and two of three doubles to rout the ACC's worst team, 6-1. Amy O'Donnell breezed through her No. 1 singles match against Marissa Gildemeister without a blemish, 6-0, 6-0.

    Sunday in Winston-Salem, however, the Demon Deacons (18-1, 8-0) tore through the Cavs to claim the conference regular season title. The Deacs won every match in straight sets.

    Virginia lost 8-4 Friday and 5-1 Saturday. Cav Ryan Kalamaya went 3-for-5 with three RBIs Sunday.
