The Virginia men's tennis team lost only one match against Maryland to return to the win column with a 6-1 victory over the Terps.
Although Cav coach Dick Stockton used only three of his regular singles competitors, the Cavaliers still captured five of the six singles contests. Maryland's Luan Nguyen notched the only victory for the Terps. Cav Brian Vahaly, who is currently ranked fourth in the nation, stayed hot, defeating Chris Chiu 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 1 match.
Singles victories clinched the win, but Virginia started strong by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
Vahaly and Hunter Montgomery led the way for the Cavs (13-5, 3-2 ACC) in doubles action, defeating Maryland's Chiu and Jonathan Murchison 8-1. The pair of juniors, who are currently ranked 16th in the nation, notched the victory after losing to Clemson Sunday.
Brian Hunter and John Winter won at No. 2 doubles while the third-seed tandem of Nick Acquavella and Chris Chatham rounded out Virginia's doubles sweep.
Warrick to Washington?
Florida State wide receiver Peter Warrick met with Washington Redskins coaches yesterday in hopes of improving his NFL draft stock. The Redskins own the second and third picks in the April draft.
Once considered a lock to be the Cleveland Browns' top selection at the No. 1 spot, Warrick cast doubt in the minds of NFL scouts by running a mediocre 40-yard dash time last month.
The Redskins, though, saw Warrick run a 4.48 a week later, making him an option for a top-three pick. Other players Washington is considering include Penn State defensive standouts LaVar Arrington and Courtney Brown and Alabama offensive lineman Chris Samuels.

The softball team's doubleheader at Liberty was cancelled yesterday due to rain. The Cavs (15-27, 0-2 ACC), who are trying to bounce back from two defeats to North Carolina, will take the field again on the road against Elon College Friday.
