Bringing out the Kid at Heart
"Pop Goes the Page," an exhibit in Alderman Library's Special Collections department, is currently open and will run through August 18 in the library's McGregor Room. The exhibit will trace the history of pop-up books ranging from three-dimensional illustrations to books complete with sound effects and themed series of books. The collection was taken from Brenda Forman's personal collection. Forman, a resident of Northern Virginia, has an extensive collection from numerous different sources. The exhibit is free and open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Summer Live Arts
It's the year of dysfunction in theater and film. If the recent Oscar winner "American Beauty" wasn't enough, "The Chemistry of Change," a play written by Marlane Meyer and directed by Betsy Rudelich Tucker, will explore the problems that a 1950s family must overcome in the Old Michie Building downtown. Using a familiar nostalgic ambience as a set for the discussion of philosophical ideas and social problems such as abortion and gender roles, this play should delve into conflicts of the pre-"American Beauty" era family. For ticket information and showtimes, call 977-4177. Call-in tickets must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance. The theatre is located on 609 East Market St.
