Coleman takes over Clemons director position

Coming all the way from Kansas, Vicki Coleman set up office in Clemons Library yesterday, where she will serve as the library's new director.

"I would like to ensure meeting the needs of the students today and in the future," Coleman said of her new position at Clemons, which also houses the Robertson Media Center.

Coleman, who has significant experience in working with library systems, previously worked at the University of Kansas at Lawrence, where she was the director of the Spahr Engineering Library. Prior to that, she was the head of electronic reference services at Texas A&M University.

Coleman said she came to the University for several reasons, including the opportunity to work with undergraduate students.

Coleman became the new director after a multi-step hiring process that lasted several months. After initially answering an advertisement for the position, Coleman had interviews with Clemons staff, the University librarian and a meeting with the Student Library Committee.

Diane Walker, associate University librarian and head of the search committee for the position, said Coleman was picked because "she was the best combination of things that the library was looking for."

Walker said these qualities include a strong commitment to library service and excellent communication skills

University Librarian Karin Wittenborg said she believes Coleman brings "a lot of vision and commitment to a new era of library service to undergraduates."

Coleman replaces Jim Self, who left the post in February to direct the University Library's Management Information Services.
