Martino snags preseason All-American nod

Last week Kyle Martino was named a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, college soccer's MVP award. Yesterday, the Virginia sophomore grabbed second team preseason All-American honors from Soccer America magazine.

Soccer America also gave the Virginia team a nod, ranking it third in the nation. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has the Cavs at No. 10.

Martino, a center midfielder, leads the Cavaliers in their opening contests this weekend in the Virginia Soccer Classic Tournament. The Cavs host South Florida tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Jacksonville Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Neil Fingleton, a 7-foot-6 center from Durham, England, by way of Worcester, Mass., was expected to lighten the blow of losing blue-chipper Jason Parker to Kentucky. North Carolina is unsure when Fingleton will return to the court, but Doherty told the Raleigh News & Observer, "I think right now, Neil is probably doing very well with his recovery from back surgery."

Doherty went on to add that redshirting Fingleton remains a possibility.

    Tar Heel wideout suspended

As North Carolina's football team prepared to host Tulsa Saturday, sophomore wide receiver Chesley Borders was suspended indefinitely following a traffic incident Wednesday.

Tar Heel coach Carl Torbush announced Borders will be suspended until the legal issue is settled. Although Borders had a quiet freshman year, he was voted Most Improved Player on offense following spring practice. His court date is set for Sept. 18.

    Leader of the 'Pack

As N.C. State Athletic Director Les Robinson cleans out his office and departs for The Citadel, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox has yet to find a replacement.

Fox said she is pleased with the progress of the search, but she expects another two weeks to pass before N.C. State names a successor. As Fox told the Raleigh News & Observer, an experienced athletic director was "certainly desirable" but not absolutely necessary.

The leading candidates include three current athletic directors: Jim Copeland of Southern Methodist, Lee Moon of Wyoming and Lee Fowler of Middle Tennessee State, the News & Observer reported.
