Officials seek to fill new financial post

University President John T. Casteen III and Leonard Sandridge, executive vice president and chief operating officer, will head a committee to search for a vice president of finance, a new position at the University.

The vice president is one of several new executives who will report to Sandridge.

He or she will be responsible for financial systems, policies and procedures and will perform "the detailed responsibilities of finance and business operations," Sandridge said.

The vice president also will oversee several University divisions, including Business Operations, Financial Administration, Human Resources, Risk Management and Business Analysis.

All of these departments now report to Sandridge.

The search committee is looking for someone with a master's of business administration or comparable degree.

A Certified Public Accountant certificate or doctorate would be looked upon favorably as well, Sandridge said.

"A clear knowledge of supervisory skills and leadership skills" are important in a candidate, he said.

Director of Risk Management Richard Schupp, who will report to the new vice president, said he also would like to see a person with strong leadership skills in the position.

"I do not expect an expert knowledge in all departments, but I would hope for someone who is a people person and an organizer with a good background in finance," Schupp said. "Most importantly, a person who is a good leader."

The new vice president would depend on division heads to gather information about their respective departments, while the division heads would depend on him to give them the "big picture," Schupp said.

Sandridge said representatives from the University's academic departments will be on the search committee. The specific department heads the vice president will oversee will not be on the selection committee, but they will be involved in the final stages of the decision process, Sandridge said.

The position was created as part of a reorganization of top university officials.

"It is part of the restructuring that we began last year when Mr. Sandridge became the University's chief operating officer and took on managerial supervision of the hospital," Casteen said.

Before the reorganization, Sandridge's title was executive vice president and chief financial officer.

He used to be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the University, but he now controls the operations of the Medical Center as well.

Although his title changed, Sandridge still is responsible for many duties as chief financial officer.

The new vice president would take over some of those duties.

Korn/Ferry International, a Washington, DC, firm, is accepting applications for the position and locating potential candidates. Officials from the company had not yet reported back on their progress yesterday, Sandridge said.
