Shedding light
To honor the lives of those lost in the Middle East over the past week, University students have organized a candlelight vigil on the Lawn at 8 p.m. tonight.
"So much has been lost in such a small amount of time," Hillel President Melinda Moshell said.
Hillel, a Jewish student community organization, is organizing the event along with the Arab Student Organization, the Muslim Student Association and the Virginia Israel Public Affairs Committee. The participating groups want to "give honor and recognition to all of the human lives tragically ended due to recent events in the Middle East," Moshell said.
Many students at the University have relatives who live in the Middle East, friends who are living there for the semester and personal connections to people who have been called in for military service, she said.
She added that she hopes the vigil will reach a broad group. While "we can't say what should be going" on in the Middle East, the groups want to honor all the victims, Moshell said.
