Gazing into the future
Even though one of Larry J. Sabato's favorite sayings is "He who lives by the crystal ball ends up eating ground dust," the University Government and Foreign Affairs professor will attempt to predict the outcome of the 2000 elections tonight at 7 p.m. in Wilson Hall.
The evening's presentation, entitled "Sabato's Crystal Ball," is meant to educate, entertain and shed light on the upcoming elections, both on the national and local levels.
At the University's Center for Governmental Studies, Sabato works with other researchers to develop electoral maps meant to predict voting trends throughout the country. Such predictions have been at the core of his seminars.

"We try to figure out what will likely happen not only in the presidential race, but in the Virginia senate rate and other important congressional races around the nation," said Joshua Scott from the Center of Governmental Studies.
Sabato will spice up his findings by offering a well-rounded glimpse into the campaign season, including a viewing of some of this election's best political commercials.
This election period is the highlight of Sabato's four-year cycle, Scott said. "He has literally been traveling across the country doing similar presentations for the past few months."
The Center for Governmental Studies hopes to raise awareness of political issues to those in the college environment.
"Even in a large university community like the one here, it's always difficult to get people involved," Scott said.
Tonight's forum is meant to get voting-age students excited about November 7. Sabato plans to pull out all his tricks for a complete discussion.
"It should be very entertaining," Scott said. Sabato "always gives engaging lectures, but this is a way for him to continue the conversation beyond the classroom."
