Sacrificing learning to health

UPON ENTERING the Aquatics and Fitness Center, one is reminded that Thomas Jefferson once said, "Give about two hours a day to exercise, for health must not be sacrificed to learning. A strong body makes the mind strong." As always, Mr. Jefferson indeed has some valuable words for us, but the proposed renovations to the AFC are an indication that we have taken his advice too far.

According to the Web site for Intramural Sports, the AFC opened in 1996 and "marked a new era in Intramural-Recreational Sports," as it more than doubled the space devoted to fitness on Grounds. The University’s Orientation and Transition programs are vital to supporting first year and transfer students throughout their entire transition to college. But much of their work goes into planning summer orientation sessions. Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
