Teen shot in bowling alley parking lot

A 16-year old male was shot in the leg Saturday night outside Kegler's Bowling Alley, located at 2000 Seminole Trail off Route 29, police said.

Around 10:50 p.m., Albemarle County Police received a call reporting "disorder in the parking lot" of Kegler's.

Sgt. Shawn Schwertfeger said there was no mention of gunshots in the initial call to police.

When police arrived on the scene, the victim was lying in front of the bowling alley's entrance with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police responded within two minutes after the call, Schwertfeger said.

The name of the victim could not be released because of his age.

The victim was shot in the upper leg with a small handgun, according to the police report. The round went in and out, so the resulting wound was not life threatening, Schwertfeger said. The victim was taken to University Hospital for treatment, but his current condition is unknown.

Schwertfeger said police think the incident was a carryover from a Friday night dispute between the victim and the alleged shooter on Longwood Drive, near Route 64.

A shift manager at the bowling alley, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was working when the shots went off.

One party was entering the bowling alley as the other party was leaving, the manager said.

The two recognized each other, exchanged a few words and then headed outside to Kegler's parking lot, where the gunshots were fired, he said.

The shift manager said he did not hear the gunshots himself but saw people running frantically.

Soon after, someone entered the building from outside and told him to call 911 for help.

He said the incident was not directly involved with the bowling alley. He expressed relief that the outcome of the dispute was not worse than it was. "They took it back outside, thank God," he said.

No arrests had been made in connection with the incident yesterday, but there are two suspects.

Schwertfeger described one suspect as a young, white, slender male. He was wearing a light-colored shirt, blue jeans and a bandana around his head at the time of the incident.

A young black male who also was wearing a light-colored shirt and blue jeans, but no bandana, accompanied him, according to police.

The suspects were reportedly driving a faded red Hyundai.

Police still were trying to identify the car's license plate number yesterday.

Schwertfeger said witnesses either left the scene immediately following the incident or refused to comment to police.

The police department is asking anyone with information on Saturday night's shooting to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 977-4000.
