Thief robs two students at gunpoint on Shamrock Road

Two University students were held up at gunpoint while walking home on Shamrock Road early Saturday morning, police said.

Charlottesville Police Sgt. Ron Willis said a male and a female student were headed home together along the 100 block of Shamrock Road between Stadium Road and Jefferson Park Avenue around 4:15 a.m. Saturday morning.

The pair reported they then noticed a man walking behind them.

Willis said the man then came up behind the two students, "reached out and grabbed the [male student's] arm" and displayed a black handgun.

The suspect then ordered the pair to hand over their money.

Willis said the male student gave the suspect his wallet, which contained several personal items.

Willis declined to say whether the suspect stole any money from the victims, or the value of the stolen personal items.

After taking the wallet, the suspect ordered the victims to lie facedown on the ground while he fled the scene.

Willis said the two victims then remained on the ground until the suspect was gone.

They then called the police from a nearby house where the male victim resided. Charlottesville Police responded to the call at the house.

Willis said neither of the victims were injured in the incident.

Willis said police do not yet have any suspects in the case and the investigation is ongoing. He said it has been transferred to the Charlottesville Police Department's Investigations division.

He said the assailant appeared to be a black male in his early 20s, about 5'9" and 140 pounds.
