Cross country teams end up fifth in region

The Cavalier men's cross country team finished fifth at the NCAA Southeast Regional Saturday in Furman, S.C.

Led by a fifth place finish by Bobby Thiele, the Cavs finished with a team score of 146, just behind Wake Forest's 143. William & Mary, N.C. State and Duke rounded out the top 3. Although the Cavaliers failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships as a team, Thiele qualified as an individual.

The women's team also competed at the meet and finished fifth with a team score of 123. Sarah Folse was the top finisher for the Cavaliers, placing 17th.

Virginia dominates at Romp

The Virginia women's crew team won three of its four events in the annual Rivanna Romp regatta at the Rivanna Reservoir yesterday.

  • The Cavs hosted Duke, Clemson, Georgetown, Miami, Ohio State and North Carolina, and they fielded three boats. The Cavaliers' "A" boat took first in the women's eight head race, novice eight head race, and the varsity four event. Duke's "A" boat finished first in the final event, the pair competition, while Virginia's "A" finished third. The Rivanna Romp was the Cavalier women's final fall event.

    Volleyball bows to Duke, 3-0

    The Virginia women's volleyball team fell to Duke 3-0 (15-4, 16-14, 16-14) at Cameron Indoor Stadium Saturday, bringing an end to its regular season.

    Despite the loss, senior middle Deanna Zwarich, became Virginia's career kills leader Friday night against Wake Forest and extended her streak of consecutive matches in double figures to 26. Virginia lost to Wake 3-2 (11-15, 5-15, 15-5, 15-4, 16-14) on the road. Zwarich racked up 13 kills against the Blue Devils, increasing her career total to 1,484.

    The Cavaliers (15-14, 8-8 ACC) must now prepare for the ACC Tournament, which will be held November 16-19 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

    Wrestling tops JMU in opener

    Virginia won its season opener against James Madison 26-10 Saturday night at JMU's Godwin Hall.

    The Dukes took an early 10-3 lead after the first three bouts, but the Cavs went on to capture the final seven and seal the victory.

    Swimming posts wins over Pitt

    The 11th-ranked Virginia men's swim team posted a close 122-119 victory against Pittsburgh, while the No. 12 women's team triumphed 132-109 at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh.

    Both Virginia teams improve to 4-0 on the season. While the Cav men won only five events, they swept the top three places in all five to narrowly defeat Pitt overall. The Virginia women took nine of 13 events in winning their 24th consecutive dual meet.

    Gillen & Co. officially nab three

    Jermaine Harper, Keith Jenifer and Jason Clark signed letters of intent to play basketball at Virginia beginning 2001-2002 Wednesday, the official kick-off day of the NCAA signing period, .

    Harper, a 6-foot-3 guard at Blue Ridge School, and Jenifer and Clark, both at the basketball powerhouse Hargrave Military Academy, all verbally committed to Virginia earlier, but now have made it official.

    Recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons has said that those three, in addition to 6-9 power forward Elton Brown's commitment, give Virginia the best recruiting class in the ACC as of now.
