Although many University officials enthusiastically support a dance program at the University, many differ on the details of such a program.
The Virginia 2020 Fine and Performing Arts Planning Commission report cites a program in dance as one of its major recommendations. University President John T. Casteen III established the Virginia 2020 Planning Commissions in 1998 to project a vision of where the University wants to be in 20 years.
Robert Chapel, Fine and Performing Arts Commission Chairman, said feedback about the program has been extremely positive.
"Everybody on the commission and in the Drama Department are all for having a dance program," Chapel said. He noted the lack of facilities and funding as the main problems facing a dance program.
As of now, no facilities with springed floors, necessary for dancers because of their rebound capabilities, are available at the University. A proposed expansion of the drama building - which is included in the Commission's recommendations - would include a dance studio, as would the proposed music building, Chapel said.
