NBA loads up on ACC standouts

The NBA's 2000-01 opening day rosters released Tuesday listed 56 players from Atlantic Coast Conference schools. The ACC is the only conference to have at least one player on each of the 30 NBA team rosters.

North Carolina led the ACC with 13 NBA players. Former Tar Heels in the NBA are: Vince Carter (Toronto Raptors) Hubert Davis (Dallas Mavericks), Rick Fox (Los Angeles Lakers), Antawn Jamison (Golden State Warriors), George Lynch (Philadelphia 76ers), Jeff McInnis (Los Angeles Clippers), Eric Montross (Detroit Pistons), Sam Perkins (Indiana Pacers), J.R. Reid (Cleveland Cavaliers), Rasheed Wallace (Portland Trailblazers), Shammond Williams (Seattle SuperSonics) and Scott Williams (Milwaukee Bucks).

Duke and Georgia Tech were tied for second with nine players each. Virginia and Florida State each had four players on NBA rosters. The former Cavaliers in the NBA are John Crotty and Olden Polynice of the Utah Jazz, Jamal Robinson of the Miami Heat and Bryant Stith of the Boston Celtics.

    A thorny issue

N.C. State's Damon Thornton, suspended from his team since Oct. 11 following drunk driving charges, will begin individual workouts with the Wolfpack coaching staff this week, coach Herb Sendek told The Associated Press.

Sendek said Thornton is still suspended.

Thornton, a three-year starter from Norfolk, Va., received 12 months probation and must complete an alcohol treatment program. He pleaded guilty to the drunk driving charge and charges of leaving the scene of an accident, unsafe movement in a vehicle and failure to stop for a vehicle with a blue light and siren.

The charges stemmed from an incident when Thornton backed teammate Damien Wilkins' car out of a cul-de-sac, through a stop sign and into a parked car before leaving the scene.
