Women's basketball snuffs Red Flash

Sometimes the stars settle in perfect alignment and everything goes your way.

Last night's 116-63 victory over St. Francis was one of those nights for the No. 17 Virginia women's basketball team.

The Cavaliers (4-2) started off slowly in the opening minutes of the first half and were behind the Red Flash the first six minutes of the game. Then senior forward Svetlana Volnaya hit a three-pointer from the right corner to jump ahead 14-12, a lead the Cavs would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

St. Francis (0-3) continued to play hard but couldn't get anything going against the stingy Virginia defense. Forward Schuye LaRue had one block and five of her game-high seven steals in the first half of play.

"I thought Schuye had a tremendous first half defensively," Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said. "She got us started in a lot of our transition baskets. We really wanted to have more of an up-tempo game."
