Women's hoops falls in preseason NIT

The No. 13 Virginia women's basketball team lost to No. 8 Louisiana Tech in the semifinals of the preseason National Invitation Tournament yesterday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind.

In the first half, the Cavs (2-1) made only 13 of 34 shots and shot 38.1 percent from the field for the game, compared to the Techsters' 42.9-percent shooting. The teams were tied at 23 in the first half before Louisiana Tech went on a 14-5 run to establish a nine-point halftime lead.

Sophomore center Schuye LaRue led the Cavs with 16 points, while junior guard Telisha Quarles scored 14 and senior forward Svetlana Volnaya added 12.

The Cavs will play tonight in the consolation game against Texas, which was squelched by Purdue last night.

    The sixth-seeded Virginia women's volleyball team upset Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC Tournament Friday, but got swept by North Carolina in the semifinals Saturday in Winston-Salem, 3-0.

    The Cavs completed the 2000 season with a 16-15 record, marking their school-record fifth consecutive winning season.

    Senior middle blocker Deanna Zwarich led the Cavs with 11 kills Saturday, one day after she recorded an ACC Tournament-record 33 kills in Virginia's 3-1 win over third-seeded Wake Forest.

    In the semifinals, second-seeded North Carolina dominated the first game, hitting .344, and hit .307 compared to the Cavs' .105 for the match.

    Drowned in Knoxville

    The No. 12 Cavalier men's swimming and diving team dropped its first meet of the season Friday at No. 7 Tennessee, 136-107. Sophomore Guy Yimsomruay led the Cavs (4-1) with two victories, capturing the 200-yard individual medley in a season-best time of 1 minute, 50:57 seconds and the 200 breaststroke in a career-best time of 2:04.84.

    Virginia senior Jamie Grimes also fared well in winning the 1,000 freestyle, an event in which the Cavaliers swept the top three places. Grimes also placed third in the 500 free.

    Strong showing

    The Virginia wrestling team scored 92 points to finish third out of seven teams in the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia this weekend. Penn, the host school, won the match with 111.5 points.

    Leading the way for the Cavs was sophomore Josh Etu, who won the heavyweight class by winning all three of his matches.

    Fourteen Virginia wrestlers finished in the top six spots in their respective weight classes, highlighted by a second-place finish from Toby MacDonald at 133 pounds and a third-place finish Zach Freday at 197 pounds.

    Lane to victory

    Competing at the 2000 FINA World Cup in College Park, Md., Thursday, Virginia sophomore swimmer Cara Lane finished second in the 200-meter butterfly and third in the 400 freestyle.

    Former Cavalier swimmer Ed Moses, now a volunteer assistant coach for Virginia, won the 100 breaststroke to swept the three breaststroke events at the two-day competition.

    Net assets

    Virginia women's tennis coach Phil Rogers announced Friday the Cavaliers have signed Canadian twins Marta and Dora Bechliwanis, the top-ranked Under-18 doubles team in Canada. Marta is ranked second in the nation in singles and Dora is third.
