Wrestling reserves see action in tourney

After competing with its top wrestlers Saturday against James Madison, Virginia wrestling gave some of its non-starters a chance Sunday at the 11th Annual Keydet Invitational at Washington and Lee's Warner Center.

Saturday, the Cavs used seven straight victories to rout James Madison, 26-10, in their first meet.

Freshman Ryan Stewart - one of only two Cavaliers who lost against JMU - regrouped with four wins at Keydet. At 125 pounds, Stewart defeated Ed Tan (George Mason), Ron Jackson (Appalachian State), Payton Lamb (Old Dominion) and Evan Beard (Duke), but lost his third match to Shannon Sayne (Christopher Newport). With his 4-1 record, Stewart took third in his weight class.

Freshman J.D. Patton collected two wins in the invitational, one of them over fellow Cav Andy DeMartino.

Freshmen Scott Douglas and Reed Landry won their first collegiate matches at the event. Both finished 1-2.

    Cavs will begin season ranked

For the first time since 1995, the Virginia men's basketball team will begin its regular season in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll.

The Cavs were ranked 24th in the preseason, but dropped to 25th despite not playing a regular season game in the sport's opening weekend. St. John's, who started out the season unranked, sneaked past Virginia to No. 24 by beating Kentucky 62-61 in the opening round of the Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic Thursday.

The Red Storm lost in the final Friday to Kansas.

Virginia escaped the fate of Iowa State, which was ranked 25th in the preseason but dropped out of the poll this week even though the Cyclones did not play.

The Cavaliers tip-off their regular season Friday against Long Island at 7:30 p.m.

    Finally, FSU drops in BCS

Though both teams won convincingly over the weekend, Miami (8-1) leapfrogged Florida State (10-1) in the Bowl Championship Series rankings to claim the second spot. Last week, although ranked second in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today college football polls, Miami was ranked third in the BCS and Florida State second.

Oklahoma (9-0) remains the leader after defeating Texas A&M Saturday.

Miami defeated Pittsburgh 35-7, while Florida State routed Wake Forest 35-6 Saturday.
