CLEMSON, S.C.-The Virginia men's basketball team played exactly the way it wanted to Saturday, blowing out Clemson, 104-76, on the road. It was the first conference road victory of the season for the No. 13 Cavaliers.
"Our guys just couldn't have played a lot better than today," Virginia coach Pete Gillen said.
When Virginia (14-4, 3-4 ACC) played at Clemson (10-10, 1-6) last year, the Tigers almost bounced back from a 20-point deficit before succumbing 98-91.
Gillen "didn't mention it, but we all knew what happened last year," junior swingman Adam Hall said. "Today it was a great team effort and great team defense."
The Cavaliers began the game with tight defense and jumped to a 47-28 halftime lead with a 15-0 run that lasted more than seven minutes. Hall, forward Chris Williams and point guard Donald Hand each hit a pair of three-pointers to contribute to 7-of-14 shooting from long range in the first half.
The Cavs shot 66.7 percent in the second half and 57.4 percent overall compared to 39.1 percent for the Tigers.
In addition to preventing a comeback, the Cavaliers kept Clemson guard Will Solomon, the ACC's leading scorer, from making a significant impact. Solomon, who was averaging 27 points per game in conference games, scored only 10 on 2-of-14 shooting from the field. He took more shots than any other Tiger in his lowest-scoring game of the season.
