Indoor track throws its way into top eight

Virginia sophomore Eliese Mitchell accounted for two of the Virginia indoor track and field team's nine top-eight finishes in the National Open at Penn State on Saturday.

Mitchell took fourth place in the 20-pound hammer weight with a throw of 17.09 meters and seventh in the shot put with a 13.68-meter effort. In the 60-meter dash, sophomore Kiamesha Otey captured eighth place with a time of 7.73 seconds.

"I was hoping to do better," Mitchell said. "My shot-put was a season best. I threw 44 feet, 10 inches, and I was aiming for 45 feet [17.72 meters] so I'm happy with my shot put performance. I have a lot to learn with the weight. As far as confidence in the ring, I still get nervous. I think I always will."

On the men's side, Virginia sophomore McGavok Dunbar raced to sixth place in the 800 run with a time of one minute, 51.86 seconds. Junior Jarett Hagwood placed sixth in the 60 hurdles, finishing in 8.09. Sophomore Bill Johnston placed seventh in the 35-pound weight with a 17.03 meter throw.

The Cavaliers also placed in several relays. The women took fourth in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:52.84. The men ran the distance medley in 10:02.48 for a seventh place finish, and also won fifth place in the 1600 relay at 3:34.97.

"I think we competed really well," Cav distance runner Sarah Folse said. "Our coach was trying to get us to not so much worry about time but just go out and race and really compete. I think we had a lot of people on the team that did that this weekend."

Folse appeared to finish third in the 5,000 run with a NCAA indoor track meet qualifying time of 16:23.45, but a confusion at the finish line among race officials led to her disqualification.

Virginia's next meet is the Feb. 10 Christopher Newport Invite at Newport News, Va. The important ACC indoor track meet takes place the following weekend on Feb. 16.
