Women lose to Florida State for first time

This could be the lowest of the low. For the first time, the Virginia women's basketball team lost to Florida State.

The Cavaliers entered the game 20-0 against the Seminoles in a series that dates back to 1990, but they allowed Levys Torres to put back her own miss in the final seconds and fell, 60-58, at the Tallahassee Leon County Civic Center last night. Virginia, now 13-8 overall and 4-4 in the ACC, has lost four out of its last six games and three straight in the conference. The last time the Cavaliers lost that many ACC games in a row was 1989.

Virginia is in the midst of its worst start since the 1979-80 season. Schuye LaRue had 16 points for the Cavaliers. Marcie Dickson added 14. Torres' 15 led Florida State (12-6, 4-4).

Virginia will return home to face Wake Forest on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Cavaliers are 47-1 against the Demon Deacons. The last time Virginia lost was in 1977.

  • Rough play not acceptable in ACC

Duke's 98-77 win over Georgia Tech Saturday was an intense contest. Maybe too much so.

Duke's Mike Dunleavy received an elbow courtesy of Tech's Micheal Isenhour. Later in the game, the Devils' Carlos Boozer returned the favor to Isenhour as they made their way up the court.

Both coaches, Mike Krzyzewski of Duke and Paul Hewitt of Georgia Tech, were contacted by ACC officials regarding the incidents and have taken action with their players.

The league has not taken any action against the players involved.

    Cavalier coach moves on

Former Virginia wide receiver and running backs coach Andre Powell has joined North Carolina's coaching staff as a running backs coach.

Powell is the final appointment to the staff created by John Bunting, the Heels' new head coach.

Powell spent the last five years with Virginia and coached several current NFL players, including the New York Giants' Tiki Barber.

Powell served under offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill, who also is leaving Virginia to join the North Carolina program.

    Basketball game keeps going

A basketball game taking three days to decide? Unheard of! But that was indeed the case in a Division III game between Kalamazoo and Olivet.

The game, played Saturday, ended in controversy. It unofficially was decided on review of a last-second three-point shot made by Kalamazoo. The shot, which was originally waived off, finally was allowed after the officials reviewed a video from a camcorder deep in the stands. Olivet contacted the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and contested that the shot had not beaten the buzzer.

The MIAC passed the complaint along to the NCAA which, upon further review, reversed the referee's decision, disallowed the shot and gave Olivet the victory, three days after the fact.

The NCAA stated that cameras can be consulted to make game-changing decisions, but those cameras cannot be more than 12 feet from the court.
