Web site to offer creative outlet for students

When creative and bright ideas come up, a new Student Council server Web site called "The Lightbulb" will soon give them a place to shine.

The Web site (www.student.virginia.edu/thelightbulb) created and designed by fourth-year Engineering student Johnny Lee, aims to provide a network of communication and resources for individuals involved in creative efforts ranging from the arts to engineering.

In October, the Council Arts Committee agreed to sponsor the Web site after Lee presented the idea at a Council meeting, said Committee Co-Chairman Danny Reid.

The Web site now is under construction and cannot be accessed to its full extent, but Lee hopes it will be finished and on the Student Council server by the end of March.

"The Web page will highlight the important contributions artists make to the University community," Council Chief-of-Staff Abby Fifer said. "It is a good way for artists to showcase their works, whether to fellow students or potential employers."

The site's motto encourages University community members to post "anything that might be interesting to a creative individual."

Ideally, the site would allow students to show short movies, said Marissa Cato, Council Arts Committee co-chairwoman.

Lee intends for students involved in all types of creative endeavors at the University to use the site as a comfortable and open forum to display their work.

The Web site states "all forms of art are 'creative,' but science, engineering, problem solving and construction are also intensely creative efforts and should not be excluded."

Lee developed the idea while at work in the digital media lab in Clemons Library.

"While there, I saw that most people don't know much about the University as far as the creative resources available to them," he said. "Rather than telling people about the resources by word of mouth, I decided to build a Web site for them."

He added that everyone he talked to about the site is in favor of the site's purpose and goals, and he hopes people will use the Web site to send him their feedback.
