Spring Awareness

The race for spring a cappella concerts has begun. But this weekend, though the Virginia Belles surely will hit the high notes in their first concert of the season, the tune will be to a slightly more somber note.

This Sunday, beginning at 4 p.m. in the Amphitheater, the Virginia Belles will perform in conjunction with the Virginia Dance Company to help raise money to benefit S.A.F.E. and One in Four, two sexual assault awareness groups at the University.

"I think the Belles really felt like the work we're trying to do had impacted them so much that they decided to do this," said Dan Carlile, president of One in Four. He explained that One in Four has supported the Belles' decision to do the concert from the get-go, even though his group has not been heavily involved in the project itself.

Carlile said One in Four has not done a benefit concert for over two years and that he is enthusiastic about the Belles' concert.

Depending on how much money is raised from donations made at the concert, Carlile said One in Four will use the funds for anything from updating presentation materials to expanding their Web site or getting a dot-com address.

He added that he hopes people simply will have a good time listening to the Belles and learning a bit about sexual assault education and prevention.

"I just hope people come out and meet the people who are involved," Carlile said.
