Can I get a bid for a bus?
If you have always had a hankering to buy a University Transit Service bus, today may be your lucky day.
The Surplus Property Department, a division of the University designed to dispose of unwanted or superfluous departmental property, will be holding one of its monthly auctions today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Depot on 1101 Millmont Road.
"We get surplus property from all over the University," said Surplus Property Manager Bobby Carefoot. "Departments give them to us when they get new items."
Today, 785 lot items will be up for sale to the general public, from bedspreads to "Impressionist-style framed posters" to two UTS buses in working condition.
Carefoot said that he believes the buses are being sold because "they're old and University Transit got some new buses, so they tucked these out of service."
Although he could not estimate how much the buses would sell for, Carefoot thought they would be cheaper than the Surplus Department's most expensive sale ever, a $10,000 grand piano. The profits from each sale return to the department that originally contributed the surplus item.
"We sell a lot of X-ray equipment," Carefoot said. One of today's main draws also includes an electric forklift.
The unique merchandise usually draws a crowd of dealers and interested individuals, but "students come if they're looking for something in particular," Carefoot explained. "We sell some good computers. Or if they need furniture."
But after all, who needs furniture if you can buy a bus?
