Matthews cancels Sunday concert

Yesterday, the Dave Matthews Band official Web site posted the cancellation of the band's second Charlottesville show scheduled for Sunday, April 22.

The Web site stated that the concert would not be beneficial enough to the Bama Works Funds to be held.

Refunds will be available to everyone who bought tickets for the second show.

"While I initially thought the fans and community would be further benefited by the addition of a second show, I now believe we should work within the limits of one show," said Dave Matthews Band manager Coran Capshaw in a press release. "To date, ticket sales for the second show do not assure sufficient additional net proceeds for the charitable fund to justify the strain on the community that the second show may bring."

The first concert will bring in more than $850,000 for the Bama Works Fund. Bama Works Fund serves the Charlottesville-Albemarle community.

"Based on the way that sales were run, we felt that everyone in Charlottesville and the University had a chance to buy tickets if they wanted," PK German Chairman Jbeau Lewis said.

PK German is the part of the University Programs Council that coordinates University concerts and events.

  • "We are confident that most students and community residents who wanted to attend the concert were able to purchase tickets for the Saturday performance," University Executive Vice President Leonard W. Sandridge Jr. said.

Some students were disappointed by the cancellation.

"It's a disappointment but since they're doing it for charity and there isn't enough money to justify costs, it's probably a good idea to cancel the show," second-year Engineering student Matt Fleming said.

Fleming would have attended both shows. He bought a set of tickets for the second show to accommodate family members who could not go to the first concert.

PK German has been involved with helping the band's concert promoter, SFX Entertainment, and will provide labor and hospitality prior to the show.

"We're obviously disappointed but we're still overjoyed to have this one event for the community," Lewis said.
