All the stadium's a stage

It's not every day that the Dave Matthews Band performs at Scott Stadium.

In preparation for the long-anticipated event, SFX Promotions now is constructing the stage at the stadium, which some students have taken a great interest in, especially those who live in the first-year residence halls along Alderman Road.

First-year college student and Dave Matthews fan David Hammond has taken pictures of the construction progress throughout the week.

"It's just for personal interest," Hammond said of his documentation efforts.

As a resident of Fitzhugh house, which is located directly across from the stadium, Hammond has been able to make his visits easily.

But Hammond, who is also Fitzhugh House Council president, said that Fitzhugh residents expressed concern that outsiders would take advantage of their convenient location during the concert and crowd their balconies or the grassy hill in front of the dorm.

However, he said that the policy for the concert is that no one is allowed on the hill, including dorm residents.

"We have to stay up off the ground," Hammond said.

Fitzhugh residents also will be responsible for all guests they invite over.

"We're just going to collectively make sure that we know who everyone is who's up here," David said.

Inside the stadium, however, there will be plenty of security personnel to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Over 300 T-shirt security personnel will work the concert with the University and Charlottesville police serving as additional uniformed security, Scott stadium manager Scott Cornwell said.

The concert will be staffed, "just like a football game with added personnel at all the four gates," he added.

Many stadium ushers also will be on hand to direct "the patrons coming in [who] won't be used to the numbering system," Cornwell said.
