A Guide to Local Restaurants

Bluebird Cafe

Known for a variety of daily specials, the Blue Bird Cafe on West Main Street offers a wide range of tasty entrees, from traditional pastas to unique chicken and vegetarian dishes.

A stroll down W. Main Street may lead to this cozy establishment, which offers both inside and outdoor patio seating. The entrees range from about $15 to $20 at dinner but generally are worth the price.

Buddhist Biker Bar and Grill

The simple decor inside Buddhist, as the Biker Bar and Grill is affectionately known to University students, includes unique paintings by local artists. The food is traditional with an unexpected Asian twist. Most meals are modified with an Asian flair, like the ginger chicken and Thai barbecue wings. And don't miss the appetizers - the vegetable egg rolls are particularly good. A meal runs about $10-$15, but with drinks, it may be necessary to keep an eye on the tab.

Cafe Europa

Located on the Corner, Cafe Europa is the perfect spot to grab a quick and healthy bite to eat. This Mediterranean-style deli offers an extensive menu of salads, sandwiches and its world-famous tomato-basil soup, as well as scrumptious desserts, including baklava. The food also is priced reasonably, with sandwiches generally ringing in at under $5.

College Inn

This Corner staple provides a much-needed, much used service for University students: late-night delivery. The College Inn delivers from 11 a.m. until the early morning hours when the restaurant closes (around 2 a.m.). The menu includes a variety of vegetarian options like pizzas and salads but also has an extensive list of hearty food like gyros, souvlaki and hamburger dishes.

Hamilton's

Hamilton's is one of the Downtown Mall's finest eateries.

With entrees ranging from about $15 to $22, Hamilton's is fairly pricey but the beautifully prepared, delicious meals warrant a trip. From duck cannelloni to the vegetarian Blue Plate Special that changes daily, to grilled black angus tenderloin, Hamilton's is sure to deliver to every taste.

Martha's Cafe

Tucked away in a narrow blue house on Elliewood Avenue just off the Corner is a small and intimate restaurant that boasts an array of light, healthy and fairly priced entrees. The pastas, homemade salad dressings and inexpensive desserts are some of the biggest draws at Martha's, but the restaurant also offers a great selection of Southwestern food, appetizers and healthy pizzas. Also, check out the extensive display of paintings by local artists.

OXO

One of Charlottesville's finest restaurants, OXO has upscale, delicious menu options and the prices to match.

OXO's menu is separated into a two-course dinner followed by dessert. Though it is possible to order only one course, the food is often too tempting to resist a second dish.

Starter courses include lobster bisque or oysters, and options for the main course include seared scallops and pan-seared snapper. The delicious food and impeccable service is worth a splurge, but OXO may be the place to take your parents; a meal can easily cost $50 a person.
