Football recognized

The Virginia football team was one of 28 institutions recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for its players' graduation rate. The Cavaliers received honorable mention status for graduating over 70 percent of its players. Two other ACC schools, Wake Forest and Duke, also received honorable mention standing.

Notre Dame and Vanderbilt received the 2001 AFCA's Academic Achievement Award, which honors programs that have the highest graduation rate among schools in the survey. The survey involved players from the 1995-96 freshman class.

Heck joins Groh's staff

Virginia football coach Al Groh has more NFL experience on his side. Former NFL offensive tackle Andy Heck has joined Groh's staff as an assistant, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Heck spent the past two seasons in the NFL with the Washington Redskins as a left tackle but was released in February. Heck was the 15th pick of the 1989 NFL draft and made the NFL's all-rookie team that year at Seattle. In 1994, Heck moved from Seattle to Chicago and spent five seasons with the Bears before he joined the Redskins as a free agent.

Heck was a four-year letterman at Notre Dame, where he gathered first-team All-American honors as a senior and helped the Fighting Irish to the national championship in 1989.

NBA draft selects six from ACC

Last Wednesday's NBA draft selected six ACC players to the ranks of professional basketball. Former Duke forward Shane Battier was selected the highest among all ACC players, at sixth by Vancouver. North Carolina's Brendan Haywood was selected 20th by Cleveland before being traded to the Orlando Magic. The Boston Celtics chose Haywood's former UNC teammate Joseph Forte as the 21st overall pick.

Vancouver selected Clemson shooting guard Will Solomon 33rd overall. Atlanta chose Maryland forward Terence Morris as the 34th pick before trading him to Houston. Georgia Tech center Alvin Jones was drafted 57th to Philadelphia.

With the eighth overall pick, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Sagana Diop, the 7-footer from Oak Hill Academy whom Virginia heavily pursued before Diop decided to enter the NBA draft.
