Odds and Ends

A brotherhood united

As members of New York City's police and fire departments continue to work around the clock at ground zero in the dauntless search for survivors, one University group has stepped in, hoping to aid in the disaster relief.

Beginning yesterday at noon, the brothers of Delta Upsilon fraternity began hosting a drive for food, clothing and supplies to support the rescue effort in response to the recent tragedy in New York City and to aid those left homeless by the disaster.

"We have a lot of guys from New York in our house and a lot of people were intimately affected by the events," said Ben Brunjes, a third-year College student and Delta Upsilon's vice-president. "Our ex-president had already signed up to volunteer with the recovery efforts on Wednesday, so we just came up with the idea to do a drive so he would have something else to bring up to New York with him."

The drive will continue until tomorrow at noon at which time all collected items will be transported in U-Hauls by brothers to the Red Cross at Chelsea Pier, New York.

Delta Upsilon is seeking donations of non-perishable foods, Gatorade, bottled water, Powerbars, blankets, towels, batteries, flashlights, warm clothing, hard hats, dust masks and work gloves. All offerings can be dropped off at the Delta Upsilon house, located at 180 Rugby Rd.

"It's a cause that we feel is worthwhile," Brunjes said. "We feel it is an important thing to do even though we know we cant do that much since we are far away. But everyone in America should do their part to help heal these deep wounds."
