Firing up for fundraising

Wielding a black and yellow firefighter's boot, Third Year Council member Papya Ray shouted across the lawn:

"Firefighters' relief fund! Every cent makes a difference!"

The chant helped to raise approximately $700 for the New York 911 Firefighters Relief Fund as Third Year Council members joined forces yesterday with Charlottesville Fire Department firefighters to collect money.

Captain Rich Jones said it was difficult to put into words how much the outpouring of student donations meant to him and his department.

"Usually we're the ones giving assistance," he said. "It means a lot to us. It really does."

The Charlottesville Fire Dept. has told the New York Fire Department that they are ready and able to dispatch firefighters to New York, either to fill stations or to work at Ground Zero, Jones said.

"If we get called we are going to go up," Jones said. "We're kind of on standby right now."

Jones said that all Charlottesville city and Albemarle County stations are accepting donations for the relief fund.
