The bookstore bonus

As the leaves change color, so should your eye shadow. At least that's what our moms always told us.

To help make that crucial makeup transition, the Clinique counter in the University Bookstore is holding its annual fall semester Bonus Days. Clinique counters all over the world are famous for their "bonuses" - trendy, travel-size pouches filled with colorful cosmetics and products, given out with a purchase of $17.50 or more.

The bi-yearly package being offered now until Oct. 13 includes: an electric blue and taupe tote, a brush and mirror combo, three different shades of lipstick (Sweet Mocha, Whimsy, and Different Grape), natural hold hairspray, rinse-off foaming cleanser and the sunny, quintessential Clinique trademark Dramatically Different Moisturizer. Also included is an eye shadow called "Foxy," which Clinique counter manager Beth Maier said can be worn on every shade of skin from Caucasian to black.

"I see people buying duplicate products or more than they would normally purchase to reach the $17.50 level," said third-year College student Audra Little, a Clinique counter employee. "It's definitely an incentive."

If you don't think you can commit to $17.50 for the free caboodle case, individual samples are given out to students.

"Clinique is always coming up with new shades of lipstick and eye shadows for different seasons," Maier said. "There's even a variation on the Happy perfume line called Happier, which is more concentrated."

In addition, counter employees are trained in makeovers. They offer appointments to students for free makeovers for special occasions or just for fun.

"We're hoping to get involved with sororities and even offer discounts, but we're not there yet," Maier said.
