White named ACC field hockey player of the week

Virginia goalkeeper Emily White was named ACC field hockey player of the week for the first time in her career.

White made nine saves Sunday as the Cavaliers defeated the No. 1 Terrapins, 3-2, in penalty strokes at College Park, Md.

White stopped a total of four strokes - three in the strokeoff - in Virginia's first win ever over a No.1 ranked team.

Cavaliers ranked 15th in cross country poll

The Virginia women's cross-country team is ranked No. 15 in the most recent Division I poll. This is the Cavaliers' best ranking since they were ranked No. 12 the week of Oct. 12, 1993.

The Cavaliers finished the 2000 season ranked No. 25 followed by a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional tournament to close the season.

The women's team, following a sixth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational where it defeated seven top-25 teams, return six of its best seven runners from last season, including Jennifer Owens, a 1999 All-American.

Dantzler awarded national player of the week

Clemson quarterback Woodrow Dantzler, was named national player of the week by USA Today.com after the Tigers' 47-44 defeat at Georgia Tech. Dantzler's offense totaled 418 yards, including his final 11-yard touchdown run in overtime.
