All you can eat

It's a Thursday night and your wallet is a bit too thin to fund a trip to Cafe Europa or a call to the College Inn. This time however, the alternatives to going out are not just Easy Mac, TV dinners or the dining hall.

Instead, tonight join some of your favorite Charlottesville restaurants for the University Alumni Association's fourth annual Taste of Charlottesville event. The dinner, which will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Alumni Hall, will be dishing out free food, music and fun for all student members of the Alumni Association.

This year, participating restaurants include Baja Bean, the Buddhist Biker Bar, Starr Hill and Wild Wing Cafe. Each will be featuring samples of some of their most popular dishes. For dessert, Charlottesville's favorite, Krispy Kreme, will be serving up doughnuts galore, topping off the perfect meal ensemble with a touch of sugary goodness.

"We are going to have a ton of food at this year's event," said Helen Dwyer, head of membership for the Alumni Association. "We are just hoping to have a great turnout for this event. We always receive tremendous feedback from the students, this being their favorite event we do because they do not always get the opportunity to taste the flavor of Charlottesville."

The Alumni Association welcomes all students who are not yet current members to come and join at the door.

"This is our most popular event for recruiting," Dwyer said. "It generates the most awareness around Grounds for the Alumni Association."

In total, the Alumni Association will spend about $15,000 for the event. According to Dwyer, the cost is an afterthought to the real goals of thanking all those students devoted to supporting the future of the University and trying to increase that support.

"We have the fourth-highest membership rate in the nation," Dwyer said. "Students like signing up for membership and are committed to supporting the University once they have graduated and have a salary. We are one of the only institutions that offer a deferred payment plan to current students. Most schools don't let you join until you have graduated"
