Grateful Dead drummer revives style

Mickey Hart, the long time Grateful Dead drummer, will be coming to the University tomorrow night in a University Programs Council-sponsored event.

The concert kicks off at 8 p.m. and will be held at the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center, which is connected to Charlottesville High School. Tickets will be $8 for University students and $12 for the public.

Hart will be performing with the Bembe Orisha band, an ensemble comprised of people from all over the world. The group's focus is world music, rhythmic beats and drumming.

"Mickey Hart has been playing nationwide for some time now, and he generates great responses everywhere he goes," UPC marketing coordinator Meg Wang said. "We're so excited to have him playing here. His music is uplifting and lively and just a lot of fun to listen to."

The worldly feeling concert includes pieces from Cuban-born Nengue Hernandez on a series of cowbells and Nigerian drummer Sikiru Adepoju on the talking drum, all before Hart makes his appearance.

Hart, who has yet to record with Bembe Orisha, will be leading the band in Afro-Cuban music, but don't expect traditional Cuban music. The band's style incorporates heavy percussive dance music from African, Middle Eastern and Caribbean cultures.

Needless to say, Hart and Bembe Orisha will not be an ordinary concert experience. That, however, is the prime objective of the UPC's performing arts committee.

"This is a very diverse program that Charlottesville does not often get to see," said Rebecca Franklin, fourth-year College student and UPC executive coordinator. "This event is an opportunity for students to experience something that they normally would not experience and to gain a little culture."

Franklin said that there has been a positive reponse from the public and that tickets still are available for the performance.

"The public has been really responsive to it and they are really excited about it," Franklin said. "We hope that students take hold of this opportunity to come to a great event"
