'Amelie': A French romantic comedy at the top of its genre

A light French comedy about a kind-hearted waitress that succeeds both financially and critically and still leaves viewers reeling from its visuals and charm? Is it possible for such a bizarre cinematic creature to exist?

Yes. Yes, indeed. "Amelie" lives up to its hype and even exceeds it with a barrage of clever visuals, surprising character twists and a genuine sweetness that doesn't come off as calculated or superficial.

We follow the title character through a Reader's Digest version of her childhood all the way up to her current life as a waitress at a small caf
