The Virginia football team will host Colorado State Thursday, Aug. 22 in the second annual Jim Thorpe Classic. The game will be the first in a 13-game schedule and marks the earliest start to a football season in Virginia history.

Fresno State defeated Colorado 24-22 in the first Jim Thorpe Classic last season.

This will be the first time Virginia has faced Colorado State in football. The Rams finished 7-5 last season and posted a 45-20 victory over North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl.

  • This will be the fourth "preseason bowl" game in Virginia football history. The Cavaliers are 0-3 in these games, having lost 36-13 to Notre Dame in the 1989 Kickoff Classic and 18-17 to Michigan in the 1995 Pigskin Classic. Last season, Virginia fell to Wisconsin 26-17 in the Eddie Robinson Classic.

    UNC defensive coordinator takes job at Georgia Tech

    North Carolina defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, a former Virginia defensive back, resigned Tuesday to take the same position at Georgia Tech under new head coach Chan Gailey.

    Tenuta spent one season at North Carolina as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. The Tar Heels finished 8-5 and defeated Auburn 16-10 in the Peach Bowl.

    Tenuta graduated from Virginia in 1982 and earned three letters as a defensive back, including one year as a starter.
