Volleyball team downs Virginia Commonwealth

With the advantage in blocks (10-3) and service aces (13-9), the Cavs improved their record to 5-7 on Tuesday at Alltel Pavilion, while VCU slipped to 7-4. Registering her fifth double-double of the season, junior outside hitter Paige Davis helped the team with 15 kills, 15 digs, three blocks and two service aces.

Freshman setter and outside hitter Kristin Chaney contributed 39 assists and 10 digs, both team highs. On the defensive side of the ball, junior libero Whitney Ashcraft tallied 20 digs.

Eleven former Cavs named to ACC anniversary team

Paul Ereng, who won the 800-meter gold medal in Seoul at the 1988 Summer Olympics, was the most famous Virginia star named to the ACC 50th anniversary track team yesterday.

Three other former Cavalier men made the team: All-American triple jumper Keith Witherspoon, two-time All-American 1000-meter runner Greg Canty and three-time All-American 800-meter runner Ray Brown.

ACC voters also named seven former Cavalier women to the team: five-time All-American long jumper Sonja Fridy, six-time All-American Gail Bryant, five-time All-American Michele Rowen, two-time All-American Claire Forbes, indoor high jump school record holder Sherry Gould, outdoor long jump and triple jump school record holder Dana Boone, and two-time All-American high jumper Ann Bair.
