No. 7 ranked Virginia (4-5, 2-1 ACC) was shut out against NC State (5-4, 2-1), losing 1-0 at Method Road, Raleigh, N.C.
The Wolfpack defense was the star of the show, recording its third consecutive shutout and second in the ACC, helping their team record with their second straight win over a ranked conference rival. The lone goal was scored by sophomore Aaron King in the 36th minute.
Virginia was out shot in the first half, 6-2, but controlled the game in the second, outshooting the Wolfpack, 10-2. They were unlucky not to grab an equalizer when Matt Oliver's shot hit the cross bar with three minutes left to play. Wolfpack keeper Jorge Gonzalez finished with four saves while his opposite number in Virginia, freshman Ryan Burke, finished with three.
Burke received the start in place of fellow freshman goalkeeper Ryan Best, who was inactive because of a strained quadricep muscle in his right, kicking leg.
Virginia is currently on a two-game losing skid. The Cavaliers lost Wednesday to William & Mary -- a strong in-state rival -- by a 3-2 count in overtime.
Virginia returns to action with a home game against Alabama A & M Saturday at Klöckner Stadium.
