Don't sweat the job hunt

"Work It!" exclaims the cover of Allison Hemming's book, which can be found among the shelves of resources at the University Career Center.

Some may have studied Hemming's words of advice in her book. Now students can meet the mastermind behind the words, an event sponsored by University Career Services.

Tomorrow from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Hemming, also president of the Manhattan employment agency Hired Guns, will be speaking on job hunt strategies at Bryant Hall.

Hemming caught the eye of the University when University Career Services Associate Director Karen Knierim read her book -- then not as well-known -- which was mailed to the Career Center by Hemming's publisher.

"Her book 'Work It!' is outstanding," Knierim said. "It's definitely one of the best things I've seen written in at least the last few years."

Knierim's admiration of the book compelled her to invite Hemming, who also spoke on The Today Show, Good Morning America and CNN, she said.

"I feel really lucky that she's coming here," Knierim said. "She's very enthusiastic and dynamic. I think she's going to be a great speaker Thursday night, with a lot of great ideas to give away."

Knierim said she was particularly interested in the innovative ideas Hemmings offered to job-hunters in her book.

"[She gives] lots of creative ideas about how to get noticed in the job market, which is important because of the really tight economy that we have now," Knierim said. "It's an employer's market right now."

Perhaps anxieties of the future are enough to draw job-enthused students to the career center Thursday night. If not, though, Knierim presented a strong voice of persuasion.

"I expect her to be one of a half dozen of the dynamic job-search speakers that I've seen in my 28 years here," Knierim said.
