Philanthropist John W. Kluge donated $500,000 to the University Medical School to promote palliative care, according to University Media Relations.
"We are extremely grateful to John Kluge for his continuing generosity and for his vision," Medical School Dean Arthur "Tim" Garson Jr. said.
University Media Relations reported that the donation must be matched by $1.5 million from other donors that will provide palliative care practices.
These practices are intended to relieve pain or discomfort in patients suffering from conditions with no known cure, Garson said.
"When people are not quite at the end of their lives but a cure is not possible, palliative care is something that is done for people," Garson said.
Additionally, palliative care allows doctors to evaluate and treat patients' needs.
Doctors "can talk to patients and help them understand their situation," Garson said.
