The Cavaliers began their Spring Break with a winning record, but returned home with a losing one.
Virginia (13-14) entered its first weekend of games against Sacramento State with a 9-5 record. It then proceeded to drop a pair of matches to the Hornets, 2-0, 5-3.
After snapping a five-game losing streak in a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara, Virginia completed its first weekend of the trip with a 7-6 loss in the second game of its doubleheader against the Broncos. Despite the team's struggles through the first four games of the West Coast swing, senior captain Heather Field flourished, going 8-13 at the plate with five runs and two RBIs.
Virginia continued its trip with a pair of contests Tuesday, March 9, against No. 15 Fresno State. After losing the first game 2-0, the Cavaliers won their first game against a top-25 since May 19, 1999, with a 9-3 victory over the Bulldogs. The following day, Virginia squared off against No. 17 Pacific. Despite being shutout 8-0 in the first game, the Cavaliers bounced back claiming their second victory over a ranked team in as many days by a score of 9-3.
After an up-and-down first half of the road trip, the Cavaliers entered the National Invitational Tournament in San Jose, Calif. They dropped their first three matches, getting shutout by Purdue, No. 3 California and Sacramento State. Not only did Virginia fail to score in any of the contests, but California pitcher Kristina Thorson threw an eight-strikeout perfect game against the Cavs.
Virginia completed the West Coast trip with a 5-0 win over San Jose State followed by a 3-0 loss at the hands of Santa Clara.
