Virginia beats Buffaloes, 5-2, in home match

After two days of bad weather saw their match postponed twice, Virginia showed their play was anything but cold as they beat Colorado, 5-2, last night. Virginia's Marko Miklo and Stephen Rozek won their doubles match, 8-3, against the Buffaloes' duo of Elliott Quibell and Peter Bjork. Darrin Cohen and Doug Stewart added the second doubles win, 8-5, over Tsuda and Dvorak to secure the doubles point. The duo of Rylan Rizza and Nick Methlayer, ranked 24th in the country, lost their doubles match 9-7 to Marcos Digliodo and Marko Bundalo. Top seed Doug Stewart set the pace for Virginia as the Cavaliers continued into singles play, taking a straight-sets victory over Bundalo, 6-1, 6-2.

"I knew I had to come out with a lot of enthusiasm," Stewart said. "On Saturday, I played one of my worst matches and I knew if I wanted to turn it around I had to play with a lot of enthusiasm."

Stewart wasn't the only Cavalier to get off to a flying start. No. 6 seed Darrin Cohen, currently riding the wave of a four-game winning streak, added to his tally when he defeated Justin Rofel in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6.

"I came out on fire," Cohen said. "My opponent actually changed his game plan which threw me off a bit, but I got back and played some really close games in the tiebreaker."

Virginia's No. 2 seed Rylan Rizza lost his singles match, 6-4, 6-2 to Peter Bjork while No. 3 seed Stephen Rozek easily took the first set of his singles match, 4-6, before dropping the next two, 6-4,6-3, to Digliodo.

No. 4 seed Miklo notched a straight sets victory, 6-3, 6-3, over Dvorak. No. 5 seed Nick Meythaler survived a close encounter with Chad Tsuda, winning the first set and losing the second set before taking the match, 7-6, 5-7, 10-5, in a tiebreaker.

The victory extended Virginia's winning streak to six games and the best start in school history.

"We are just taking it one match at a time," Cohen said. "[We] are trying not to think too much of it, come the ACC tournament that's where you have to play your best tennis and hopefully we will be able to keep our momentum."

Virginia coach Brian Boland was pleased with his team's victory.

"Colorado is a good team, a team that we knew coming in was not ranked but was much better than that," Boland said.

Virginia will look to preserve their perfect ACC record and hold on to first place in he conference next Friday, March 26 at Clemson.
