Gamers behold great new games, beware of flops

Welcome (back) to the University of Virginia, where the "J" in "WWJD" stands for Jefferson.

This article reports the state of the videogame industry, from news items to new releases. And after a four month hiatus, I have returned with a heap of gaming goodness for your eager consumption. This summer brought many landmark events for the game industry, from unconventional MSRPs -- high (Doom 3, $54.99) and low (NFL 2K5, $19.99) -- to a California legislator's quashed attempt to criminalize the sale of M-rated games to minors. This scenario started from an incident across "the pond," when Rockstar's graphically violent PS2 game, Manhunt, allegedly inspired a 17-year-old to gruesomely murder a 14-year-old.

Also in Europe, the purported chief thief of Half-Life 2's source code was apprehended over the summer. And while we're on the topic of lax security at Valve Software, President Gabe Newell's official forum account was hijacked last week. Newell's weak password was guessed by an unidentified perpetrator, who posted "We're going gold Monday

Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond.
