Enrollment in online courses nationwide increased dramatically last year and is expected to continue to increase, according to a study by the Sloane Foundation reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The Sloane Foundation surveyed 1,170 institutions last spring.
According to the report, 1.9 million people were enrolled in online courses, a 19 percent increase from the previous year.
Administrators surveyed said they expect an even larger increase next year to 2.6 million.
The survey also examined perceptions about online learning.
The majority of administrators expressed confidence in their programs and said the quality of education received through online courses is comparable to the education received through normal classroom learning.
In addition, more than half of responding colleges said online learning was essential to their overall strategy.
