The facts on rape in South Africa

At the end of 2001, an estimated 40 million people worldwide -- 2.7 million of them children younger than 15 years -- were living with HIV/AIDS. More than 70 percent of these people live in sub-Saharan Africa.

About 1/9 of South Africa's 41 million people are infected with HIV or AIDS.

South Africa has the highest incidence of rape and child rape in the world.

On average, five children are raped every hour in South Africa.

HIV/AIDS-associated illnesses caused the deaths of three million people worldwide in 2001. Of these deaths, an estimated 580,000 were children under 15.

21,000 child rapes and about 37,000 adult rapes were reported in South Africa in 2001.

Only one in 35 rapes are actually reported, according to the South African Police Service. The actual incidence of rape in South Africa could be more than one million per year.
