Ballard's comeback produces ACC accolade

Virginia pitcher Mike Ballard's surgically-prepared left arm passed its first test with flying colors and helped the third-year pitcher receive the ACC's Pitcher of the Week award.

In his first pitching appearance since the 2003 season, the Virginia Beach native led the Cavaliers to a 2-0 victory at UNC Wilmington on Feb. 12. Allowing just two hits and striking out six over seven innings, Ballard was able to put to rest any doubts as to whether he would help to solidify the Cavaliers starting rotation this season after Tommy John surgery cost him his 2004 campaign.

Ballard's gem was one of two victories the Cavaliers managed in the season-opening three-game series in Wilmington last weekend.
