The Virginia softball team opened up ACC play with a doubleheader sweep Saturday against N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. Sunday, however, the Cavaliers were unable to tame the Wolfpack and fell 5-3 on a walk-off three-run homer by Heather Gelbard.
Virginia (12-17, 2-1 ACC) had a 3-0 lead before surrendering two runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh on Gelbard's blast. Freshman shortstop Kierstie Cameron hit a two-run homerun to right-centerfield in the fifth inning to give the Cavaliers the three run lead. Virginia sophomore Coty Tolar pitched a perfect game for five and two-thirds innings, before an infield error gave the Wolfpack their first base runner.
Saturday, Tolar improved her record to 5-6 with nine and one-third innings of work in Virginia's 7-6 ten-inning victory. Lindsay Preuss scored the winning run on a botched pickoff attempt.
In the second game, junior Erin Horn pitched a gem, throwing six innings of four-hit, shut-out softball. The Cavaliers won by a score of 8-0. Junior third-baseman Sara Laquier got Virginia off to a strong start with a first-inning three-run homer to leftfield. Right-fielder Jessica Taylor went 3-4 at the plate, scoring once and driving in a run.
