The Virginia men's tennis team brought home two titles from the 2005 Crimson Tide Fall Invitational at the University of Alabama this weekend.
Eric Riley and Jarrett Chirico, both sophomores, won their flight championships in the relatively new One-on-One Doubles competition. The tournament featured two draws of the One-on-One Doubles style play in addition to the singles and doubles competitions.
In One-on-One Doubles, which was featured for only the second time in collegiate competition, two opponents play cross-court on opposite sides while using only half of the court in a match.
Chirico defeated Alex Zuck of William & Mary, 8-3, in Flight B while Riley overcame an 8-3 deficit in a superbreaker to win the breaker 11-9 and the match against 2005 All-American Marko Rajevic of Georgia Tech.
Aside from the two titles, Riley and Chirico also managed to upset the No. 37 ranked team of Jose-Carlos Pinto and Florant Girod of Mississippi State before bowing out in the flight semifinals against the eventual champions, Marc Spicjaric and Monte Tucker of Illinois. Next for the Cavaliers, the 2005 U.Va. Fall Invitational will start Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center.
