Estimated reading time: 0 minutes

Virginia men's tennis player Somdev Devvarman defeated Dane Chuntraruk to advance to the final qualifying round of the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center USTA Pro Classic Sunday.

Devvarman backed up his No.12 ITA collegiate ranking with a strong 6-2, 6-0 victory. The native of Chennia, India will face stiffer competition in the next round from University of Georgia senior Antonio Ruiz, who holds a No.59 ITA ranking.

Devvarman stands to gain valuable experience and an improved ranking from his run on the professional USTA Futures Tour. Should he win, however, his amateur status prohibits him from accepting prize money.
