Top-ranked men's tennis team finishes season-opening California trip 1-1

The No. 1 men's tennis team got off to a rocky start, going 1-1 in its first two matches.

On Tuesday, No. 9 Pepperdine defeated the Cavaliers 4-3. It was the first season-opening loss since 2002.

Doug Stewart, Somdev Devvarman and Rylan Rizza all fell in their singles matches, while Treat Huey, Marko Miklo and Darrin Cohen each won in theirs.

On Wednesday, Virginia avoided a 0-2 start, posting a 5-2 win over No. 20 Southern California. The Cavaliers won four of the five singles matches.

Next for Virginia will be a match at No. 54 Minnesota tomorrow.
